We farm using a living aisle system that is designed around the tools we have. We try to plant a cover crop a year prior to our first year of production (usually a blend of medium red clover & white clover) and then till our garden beds out of the clover with our walk-behind BCS tractor. We maintain the aisles with a push lawn mower and cultivate alongside the produce with a wheelhoe. More about this system can be found on the FairShare CSA Coalition’s Grower InfoSheet page.
We find that our living aisle system has many benefits in both drought years and wet springs by providing erosion control, maintaining healthy soil structure, conserving soil moisture, inviting beneficial insects into the system, and providing habitat for other wildlife (read: not always welcome if they nibble our beets and carrots).
